What does your main character want right now?

Mara wants a better life. What would that look like in the next five minutes? In this scene, she wants the last ferry cleared before inspection. A broad desire can shape a character, but an immediate intention gives the scene an action we can follow. Start by naming something the character could visibly accomplish, fail at, or revise.

Our original passage says: Mara wanted a better life. She stood at the ferry desk, looking across the harbor, and wondered when things would finally change. The wish may be sincere, but the passage leaves its meaning open. A better life could mean money, safety, recognition, or leaving town. We cannot yet tell which action would count as movement toward it.

The revision says: Mara wanted the last ferry cleared before the inspector arrived at six. She slid the unsigned departure form toward Ivo. One signature, and we can lift the ramp. Now there is a task, a time boundary, and a first attempt.

Notice what we can now track. An unsigned form means the task is not done. Mara moving it toward Ivo means she is trying. His response can help, block, or change her plan. The inspector's arrival makes delay meaningful. We do not need to repeat she wants a better life after every action. Her larger desire could emerge through why this departure matters to her, and what she will risk for it.

Separate two questions in your notes. What does this person want over a long stretch of life? What are they trying to make happen in this scene? Mara might want respect at work, while today's task is securing a departure signature. Those wants can align or collide. If she needs to apologize to get the signature, completing the task may cost the pride she associates with being respected.

An observable goal does not require a chase, a deadline, or a shouted demand. Someone can want a sibling to stay for tea, or want to avoid answering a question. In a quieter scene, the attempts may be subtle. Be careful not to turn every feeling into a checklist or explain every motive before the character acts. Clarity about intention can coexist with uncertainty about deeper reasons.

Write one sentence beginning, in this scene, my character is trying to. Replace a phrase such as find happiness with a concrete action suited to the scene. Then locate the first attempt in your draft. If the goal changes, mark what caused the change. Write one observable scene goal. Next, we will test whether an obstacle actually complicates that action, rather than merely delaying it.
