A character arrives, removes a coat, says hello, talks about the weather, and finally asks the question that matters. Could the scene begin with that question? Who authorized the empty tank puts pressure between Mara and Ivo immediately. Keep one detail that tells us where we are, rather than keeping every step she took to get there.

The before passage reads: Mara walked along the dock and opened the fuel shed. She removed her coat, hung it beside the door, and greeted Ivo. They talked about the cold. She looked at the gauge on the rescue boat's tank. Who authorized the empty tank? The sequence is understandable, but four routine actions precede the exchange we want to examine.

Now start later. Who authorized the empty tank? Mara stood in the fuel shed with one hand on the rescue boat's gauge. Ivo stopped winding the hose. We retain the location and the object that prompted the question. Ivo's interrupted work establishes that he is present and affected by her words. We do not need to show the door opening to understand this confrontation.

Notice that later does not mean disoriented. The fuel shed supplies place; the gauge supplies context; Mara's question supplies the problem. Ivo's stopped hose-winding creates a response before he answers. We have removed arrival logistics without withholding the basic situation. Starting with only an unidentified voice asking who authorized it would cut more words but give readers less useful footing.

Find the first moment in a scene that changes someone's options, knowledge, or behavior. Try starting one sentence before it, then directly on it. Compare what the reader loses. You may need one earlier detail to establish a relationship or make the question intelligible. Put back that detail deliberately instead of restoring the whole walk, greeting, and coat-removal sequence by habit.

Early routine can still earn its place. A weather remark might reveal that Ivo is avoiding the tank; a slow arrival might create dread; taking off a coat might signal that Mara expects to stay. In our before version, those actions do not perform those jobs. The revision favors a direct confrontation and loses some everyday texture. Choose the entry point for the experience, not simply the shortest possible opening.

Make a copy of one scene and cut its opening up to the first meaningful pressure. Read it as if you know nothing else. Add only the context needed to understand who is acting, where they are, and what has become a problem. Start near the first meaningful pressure.
