How do I make a reusable prompt without overcomplicating it?
Save a compact pattern with explicit variables and review rules.

Full briefing transcript
A weekly stock prompt has grown into a page of repeated instructions, but you still forget to replace last week's date. Make the changing parts obvious and keep the review rules fixed. Our fictional stock update uses only three replaceable fields: week, stock rows, and notes. A reusable prompt is a compact pattern for an inspectable draft, not a long incantation or a guarantee that every future report will be correct.
The week field is week ending October sixteenth, twenty twenty six. Stock rows contain two invented items. Paper packs opened at twenty, received five, and used eight. Pen boxes opened at ten, received zero, and used three. The notes field says next week's delivery timing is unknown. All figures are fictional. We do not connect to inventory software, place orders, or share a report during this demonstration.
The fixed instruction says draft a weekly update using those three fields. For each item show opening, received, used, and closing. Closing equals opening plus received minus used. Preserve unknowns, and do not invent deliveries, reorder decisions, or promises. Return a draft only; a person checks every number before sharing. Put braces around the three variable names so the writer can see what must change without rewriting the safety and review boundaries.
Our illustrative update shows paper packs with twenty opening, five received, eight used, and seventeen closing. Pen boxes show ten opening, zero received, three used, and seven closing. Next week's delivery timing remains unknown. We wrote this output for the lesson, rather than running a named AI tool. The table follows the requested fields, but its tidy appearance is not evidence that the arithmetic or source data has been independently verified.
Perform those checks now. Twenty plus five minus eight equals seventeen. Ten plus zero minus three equals seven. Trace each opening, receipt, and usage value back to the supplied rows, then check each closing value. Verify the week label too. A reused pattern can carry stale dates or copied quantities as easily as a fresh prompt. The human reviewer should correct the underlying input when it is wrong, not merely polish the report.
Before saving the pattern, test whether it handles the cases you actually expect. Missing usage, returns, or inconsistent units may need a different rule or a clearly marked unresolved value. Do not quietly stretch this simple formula to cover them. Official prompting and evaluation guidance supports explicit requirements and representative checks; our three-field template is an editorial adaptation. Changing input structure requires renewed testing, and the template itself does not validate the accuracy of inventory records.
Save a compact pattern with explicit variables and review rules. In our update, three fields change while the format, calculation rule, uncertainty boundary, and human review stay fixed. Keep the reviewed pattern easy to inspect, and do not let reuse turn a draft into an automatic reorder or publication. The next briefing asks what information to remove before pasting material into an AI tool.
